Chapter Founding
The Theta Lambda chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was organized as the 203rd chapter of Alpha State on April 20, 1968 at the Cohen House on Rice University's campus.
The chapter was organized by Eula Lee Carter, state chairman of the committee on organization and expansion. Mrs. Carter was assisted by Phyllis Ellis, who was the State Executive secretary. There were 27 charter members.
The chapter was an outgrowth of several chapters in the Houston area. Because our membership originally drew from several Houston-area chapters, our membership continues to attract members from different locations within the greater Houston area. Our membership remains small because we are a "quota chapter" and have up to only 35 active members. The chapter founders provided for this small size to encourage members to meet in each others' homes.
